My parents always insisted that I go to university. Towards the end, I had my doubts about its usefulness. These doubts were in part related to how I would see people struggle to find employment or earn decent salaries upon graduation. These are largely unfounded though. I therefore feel the need to illustrate and insist on the usefulness of a university education for your long term well-being. While it is true that you can achieve great success without going to university, this potential is exclusive to a small minority of individuals. I will illustrate for you the benefits of going to university, which are almost universal among all degrees.

The Degree Itself
It might sound a bit weird to point this out, but one of the biggest advantages of going to university, and completing your course, is the obtainment of a diploma. This can be a bachelor’s, master’s, phd, or even a simple certificate. The fact is, that this is something that nobody can take away from you and will open a lot of doors. Many jobs do require a university degree and not all of them require that you have pursued a specific course of study. You can also show off to your friends, as people will automatically assume that you are smarter.
Making Lifelong Friends
This is one of the biggest immaterial advantages regarding going to university. University is one opportunity to meet a lot of new people. Of course, many of these will not necessarily stay in your life. Importantly, however, is the fact that the people who do stay in your life will become some of the most valuable people in your life. Many, for instance, meet their spouse at university. Others meet business partners. The fact is, that you would otherwise have never been able to meet these individuals. They will have a literally life-changing impact. Your borders will be opened, because you will be exposed to new and different opinions which will lead to question many things, and develop as a person.
Connections
This might sounds to be rather cynical, but it is true. You will meet people who will be able to get you into things that you otherwise would not have been able to. You should not treat these people as a means to get to places, of course, but this does not mean that you should not take advantage of these things. You will meet somebody who will be able to get you that invaluable job reference to enter your dream career. You will also meet those who can get you into certain clubs.
Independence
For many of us, this is the first time that we will leave home. It was for me, and I learnt a lot of life skills at university. You will have to do your own laundry, cook your own food, and clean up after yourself while juggling your many social and academic opportunities. You will no longer be able to run to your parents, or if you are from a certain section of society, your maid for help. You will need to do almost everything yourself. This includes such time-consuming chores such as doing the laundry, doing the dishes, and cooking your own food. You will find that in life, you will spend a considerable amount of time with each of these activities and more, which are all a part of adult life.
Self Discovery
University, with all of its freedom and opportunities to engage in varied and interesting activities, as well as meeting a wide range of people is one of the most intense ways of coming into your own and discovering who it is that you want to be. You will be able to pick and choose which groups, and activities that you want to associate with. This will allow you to become a better person, and become much more comfortable with the decisions that you make in life.
You Will Be Smarter
This might sound hard to believe, but a university education will make you more intelligent. This is not only through the interesting and varied people that you will meet, who will teach you how to deal with different kinds of people and therefore become a more tolerant individual. will also learn new ways of thinking not only through the various courses that you take and interactions with your professors, tutors, and classmates, but also through the clubs and associations that you will join, or perhaps only take part in on occasion. Access to the library and other educational resources will expose you to literature which will expose you to new forms of knowledge. All of this will expand your mind in so many ways.
You Will Make More Money
This is almost guaranteed. Forget those horror stories about student debt and unemployment after graduation. Debt can be resolved by following the posts on Bursary.tips. Granted, some graduates do face unemployment, but their unemployment rate is lower than that of people who never went to university. If you want to work independently, it is probably best for you to teach yourself, and hone your own business skills. For most of us, who will be employees, we will need a university education.
