Bursaries for Sailing on a Tall Ship

If you know what a tall ship is, then this is probably very exciting for you. If you do not know what a tall ship is, then I need to remind you. A tall ship is a type of sail boat with tall masts and sails. Now that you know, you are probably very excited if you had a normal childhood. Many of us grew up with stories of pirates and explorers traveling the high seas and going on adventure. Some of us might have even dreamt of joining these seafaring individuals. Believe it or not, there is an organization out there which wants to help young people develop their skills on a sail vessel. This is the Tall Ships Youth Trust. Established in 1956, it has already helped over 100,000 people receive training and traveled nearly two million miles with them. Many services are on offer, but we will focus on the bursaries which have been made available to potential sailors.
The bursaries function like most other bursaries. They are a grant of money which can be put towards the cost of your trip. If you are aged between 12 and 25, you can apply. The bursaries come either for the summer season or the autumn season. There are many bursaries available. These correspond to the various routes, challenges, and adventures organized by the Tall Ships Youth Trust. They start and end at various locations in the Atlantic Ocean. They include Liverpool, Gran Canaria, Portsmouth, Glasgow, and Whitehaven. The bursaries are generally worth a few hundred British Pounds. Priority is given, as with other bursary programs by other organizations, to disadvantaged individuals. You may apply for these bursaries once a booking has been made for one of the trips.
The good thing about these trips is that beyond the cost, you will not have to spend too much once you are on board the ship. This is because the prices include food and drinks, and accommodation. Fuel costs, and insurance are excluded however. It is also a very good experience for young people. It offers them access to expert mentors, journeys where they will see the world, as well as diverse cultures. The best thing for you to do right now if you are interested is to find your local Tall Ships Volunteer Support Group or the trust’s head office.
